What are you doing New Year's Eve?

My last couple New Year's Eves have sucked.

Last year, I sat around at home and drank champagne alone. I was even dating someone at the time, but he was out of town. That's seriously about as lame as lame gets.

The year before, I went to an awesomely fantabulous party at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. I wore a fancy dress and looked like a movie star. I flirted and drank and danced and by all accounts appeared to have a great time... but I was absolutely miserable. At the time I was still hung up on McDreamy and, as I've said before, those McDreamys can Fuck You Up.

The year before that, I was in Atlanta with my then-boyfriend. I enjoyed it at the time but now it's tainted by the later-acquired knowledge that, by then, he was already considering breaking up with me.

Anyway, I want to finally have a cool New Year's Eve again. I'm leaning toward flying to San Francisco for a few days. I have a friend or two up there but I don't want to monopolize their time (you know, "hey, it's me! Drop all your plans and hang out with me!" Not cool). SO I'll open up the invitation to my blog friends: anyone interested in chilling with me in San Fran over New Year's Eve? If you're in the LA area, last I checked, Southwest had roundtrip tickets to Oakland for around $125.

Whaddya say? I'm a pretty cool person to hang out with, and I used to be a pretty good partier, back before I started working and got old...

Hey,
Alex and I will be in the City (as in San Francisco) for New Years... no solid plans but bars and fireworks at the Embarcadero with friends. It would be great to see you (if you can handle the obnoxiousness of a long distance couple that hasn't seen each other since March). Let me know if you'll be coming up.

I believe I will be in NYC, boo. I'd rather be in SF; I love it there!

SF sounds great for New Years. I have always found that expectations never live up to the hype - at least here in Buffalo. (I won't even ask you to come here! Something tells me that our Western New York charm doesn't extend to New Years Eve fun.) Good luck in finding what you are looking for!

Yeah, I don't have very good luck on New Year's Eve. I always find it depressing. I'm still waiting for my first kiss of 2006.

margaret, oh cool! I'll definitely drop you an email if I end up getting tickets.

sixer, oooooooooo how tempting. Unfortunately, London just isn't something I can do for just a weekend. I need more time!

roonie, bummer! Seems a bunch of people are doing the NY thing this year...

michele, yeah, New Year's Eve gets a lot of hype but rarely delivers. Funny thing is, I had WAAAAY more fun on NYE as a kid. Our friends across the street always threw a big NYE bash and invited all the neighbors, and there were kids my age and we ate pizza and played games and watched fireworks from the balcony and counted down with people we knew, instead of a bunch of pretty strangers in a bar. But now all us kids are grown up and half the old neighbors have moved away anyway... sigh... you never really can go home.

Andy, that ought to be your pick-up line to the first cutie you spot at a party ;)

Hey, TLF. I followed you over from Feministing. LOVE the trolls.

SF does sound like fun. Or maybe you could find a bunch of kids to hang out with like the old days?

prairie, aren't they a riot? I guess they got tired of spewing mindless hateful drivel. Which is probably just as well.

Darlyn, I would LOVE to visit you in NYC... I checked prices, though, and the cheapest I could find was about $450, and they were crappy flights (keep in mind, too, it takes an entire day to fly from LA to NYC... I'd probably need to plan for a longer trip to make it worth a whole day of traveling). I'll check again right before NYE to see if there are any amazing last minute deals, but other than that it looks like I'll be stuck on the west coast this year. Which, in fairness, really isn't such a bad place to be stuck ;)

It looks like SF probably won't happen. I tried talking to a few people but everyone's either gone or too busy to respond. Bummer!

Hopefully my friends here will do something cool to save me from a night of champagne-soaked boredom.

If you don't have plans yet, you're more than welcome here in NYC! Andrew, Traci, Mike, and a friend from NJ are coming out for NYE in NYC. We might hang out with Miss Darlyn, who I see has already thrown her hat in the ring. Just dropping my two cents. :) And $450 ain't nothin', missy! I spent $900 to head home for Thanksgiving. NO KIDDING. *faints* :)

odderie, I know! You're stealing one of my SoCal peeps! :P

;) I would love to party with you in NYC... maybe next year. But I've already blown close to a thousand bucks to visit the fam for the holidays, myself, plus muchas hundreds on gifties... so I need to be responsible. Dammit.

Plus, a fab friend from out of town just told me she will be here for NYE. SO I'm glad I didn't end up buying those SF tickets after all -- I would've missed seeing her!

Been reading for a while and really enjoy your posts-were I in the city that I love most (San Fran) I would jump at the chance to party with a fellow feminist. Alas, I am stuck in Seattle.
